Obituary for Floyd Gene "Gene" Israel

Floyd Gene "Gene" Israel
F. Gene Israel
January 25, 1935--March 19, 2014
Gene was born to Floyd and Helen Israel in Grand Junction, Colorado. He graduated high school in 1953 where he played baseball and football. Gene enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War, serving as a radar technician on the U.S.S. Phillips out of Pearl Harbor. Before shipping out, Gene and his beautiful bride, Darlene Baker, married at Treasure Island in San Francisco on October 24, 1954.
Gene and his wife lived on Main Elk Creek north of New Castle for 27 years before retiring to Grand Junction. Gene liked having a piece of dirt to call his own, and with some help he built a house on it. Favorite past-times included hunting deer and elk, riding his favorite horse, Cocco, fishing, boating, and bowling. Gene was always up for gathering with his family and friends, grilling with a beer in hand, playing cards or dominoes, and yelling at the TV during a Broncos game. Having wildlife wander into view always brought a look of excitement to his eyes.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Darlene, of 59 years, his brother Bert Israel (Sally), Fredericksburg, VA, sister Joyce Hicks, Grand Junction, daughter Denise Doolen (Dave), son Brent Israel (Martha Fredendall), niece Terry Brethauer (George), Grand Junction, grandchildren Wendy Mathis (Vernal), La Habra, CA, Jenny Roberts (Shane), Chrissy Crain, Redding, CA, Teka Israel, Wyatt Israel, and four great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers please give in Gene’s name to the Veterans Hospital in Grand Junction.
A memorial service will be held on March 29th at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 172 N. 7th St. New Castle.
